Winners of the 2009 Sparkle Auditions
The Sparkle Auditions have been searching for talented further education learners to perform at the 2009 STAR Awards national winners celebration. All the entries have now been judged and the winner of the 2009 auditions is Reynolds Performing Arts. Learners from Reynolds Performing Arts will open the national ceremony with a number of different dance styles in the exciting energy fuelled performance which is sure to wow the audience and open the sixth annual ceremony in style. Runners up who will also perform at the awards include learners from City of Bristol College, City College Norwich, West Suffolk College, North Warwickshire and Hinckley College, Westminster Kingsway College and Sussex Coast College Hastings.

Regional celebration events
The STARs of further education (FE) from across England gathered in Leeds, Birmingham and London on 7, 8 and 9 October respectively to celebrate being short-listed for the 2009 Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) STAR Awards. More than 100 nominees celebrated their achievements and shared their experiences of working in FE at the events, which were each hosted by a local media personality.

Case studies of the 2009 short-listed nominees
Each week a case study on a short-listed nominee is put on to the STAR Awards website. The case studies outline some of the fantastic work that is going on in the sector.

When doctors told Nigel he would never walk again after two serious motorbike accidents, being honoured for his excellence as a fitness instructor would have seemed an impossible dream. But some twenty years on, having learned to walk again and trained in that profession, Nigel has been short-listed for a STAR Award.

National ceremony

The 2009 STAR Awards winners will be announced at a glittering national ceremony, on 26 November, at one of London’s most prestigious and exciting venues. The event promises to be a night of sparkling entertainment, excitement and emotion as the awards are given out and the achievements of unsung heroes are celebrated.

Business development team STARlight fund activity

The business development team from The Isle of Wight College won the 2008 STAR Award engaging employers' category. The team used its STARlight funding of £1,500 for a group development day with the United Kingdom Sailing Academy, sailing on a BT Global Challenge 67ft yacht. With two new members to the team, the aim of the group sailing activity was to support the team interaction and group dynamics of their busy office environment.

Helen Sexton STARlight fund activity

Helen Sexton, principal of The National Star College (Cheltenham) won the 2008 STAR Award lifetime achievement category. Helen chose to use her STARlight funding to lead two fundraising treks to raise money in support of the college’s major fundraising appeal; the 'Star Appeal'. Helen aims to take 24 people along Hadrian’s Wall, and in October 2010 to take 30 people to Nepal.
